Advancing Characterization of Orographic Precipitation and Implications for Hydrometeorological Risks

Speaker:  Yagmur Derin, Research Scientist, UW–Madison

Orographic precipitation is a critical driver of Earth’s water budget at various time scales. These mechanisms shape local climates, ecosystem, and societies. Moreover, hydrologic hazards driven by orographic rainfall are among the most devastating and frequent natural disasters in terms of loss of lives and property each year worldwide. A better understanding of the distribution of orographic precipitation is not only a critical topic for fundamental research but also for operational forecasting. Derin will discuss integrating satellite observations, ground-based networks, and numerical models, using machine learning to link precipitation uncertainties to environmental and physical parameters. This approach aims to improve quantitative precipitation estimates, advancing hydrological modeling and disaster preparedness in vulnerable regions.
