SUMMARY:Advancing Characterization of Orographic Precipitation and Implicat
 ions for Hydrometeorological Risks
DESCRIPTION:Speaker:  Yagmur Derin\, Research Scientist\, UW–Madison\n\n
\n\nOrographic precipitation is a critical driver of Earth’s water budge
t at various time scales. These mechanisms shape local climates\, ecosyste
m\, and societies. Moreover\, hydrologic hazards driven by orographic rain
fall are among the most devastating and frequent natural disasters in term
s of loss of lives and property each year worldwide. A better understandin
g of the distribution of orographic precipitation is not only a critical t
opic for fundamental research but also for operational forecasting. Derin
 will discuss integrating satellite observations\, ground-based networks\,
and numerical models\, using machine learning to link precipitation uncert
ainties to environmental and physical parameters. This approach aims to im
prove quantitative precipitation estimates\, advancing hydrological modeli
ng and disaster preparedness in vulnerable regions.\n\nView the livestream
