Nitrous oxide (N₂O) is a potent greenhouse gas, yet accurately assessing its emissions remains challenging because of sparse observations, strong spatial and temporal variability, and complex interactions among climate, soils, and agricultural management. This seminar will highlight our modeling efforts to better quantify agricultural N₂O emissions across scales, from reconstructing long-term U.S. emission dynamics to developing climate-sensitive dynamic emission factors and identifying mitigation opportunities. I will also introduce our contribution to the ongoing FarmFlux collaboration, where bottom-up ecosystem modeling provides spatially and temporally resolved N₂O emission estimates to support atmospheric transport modeling and aircraft observations, while these complementary approaches offer new opportunities to evaluate and improve ecosystem model capability and emission estimates.
