2024 Schedule
June 21: The Wonders of Water
On the first day of camp, we will focus on the wonders of water. We will collect water samples from nearby Goose Creek to examine macroinvertebrates and water quality. We will learn the tools used by scientists to observe the health of water bodies, focusing on measuring temperature, pH, alkalinity, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and nitrates.
June 28: The Bionic Biosphere
We will next shift to the biosphere, which is the living portion of our Earth system. Plant-related activities will focus on observing leaf transpiration, examining plant structure under microscopes, extracting leaf pigments with chromatography, and learning about roof gardens.
July 12: Feelin’ the Heat
As we move into the heat of summer, we will explore the urban heat island effect and the benefits of urban greenspaces. We will map out surface temperature patterns across Big Hill Park with a remote-controlled TerraRover and explore the relatively hot and cool locations on our heat map using scientific tools, including IR thermometers, solar meters, and densiometers. Indoor activities will focus on sensory exploration.
July 19: In Search of Treasure
We will explore Big Hill Park in search of hidden treasure, namely geocaches. As if treasure was not enough, we will participate in some exploding science experiments, including bottle rockets, soda and Mentos, and elephant toothpaste. We will top of this fun day with science-based magic tricks and challenging riddles.
July 26: The Grand Finale
The last day of camp is guaranteed to be a fun one. We will learn Newton’s Laws while experimenting with eggs. In our Builder’s Lab time, we will explore electricity and magnetism by developing batteries with potatoes and lemons and designing a levitron spinning top. Through the Water Cycle Relay game, we will explore our planet’s water cycle. And what’s a better way to end a summer of amazing camp than an ice cream party?
