Join us for UW–Madison’s 2025 Climate Change Symposium, an annual event that brings together experts and community members alike to explore timely issues in climate science. This year, our keynote and panel discussion will explore climate solutions for building resilient communities — both in the sciences and society.

This event is free and open to the public.

Keynote Speaker

Anna Michalak

Anna Michalak is the founding director of the Climate and Resilience Hub at the Carnegie Institution for Science, where she previously served as director of the Department of Global Ecology. She is also a professor (by courtesy) in the Doerr School of Sustainability at Stanford University. Her research focuses on characterizing both natural and human emissions of greenhouse gases at urban to global scales and on assessing climate change impacts on freshwater and coastal water quality.

She is the lead author of the U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Plan, a visiting faculty researcher at Google, cochair of the National Academies’ committee tasked with conducting a midterm assessment of NASA’s implementation of the decadal survey for Earth observations, and member of the carbon and water advisory boards at Schmidt Sciences.

About the Climate Change Symposium

Since 2015, the Center for Climatic Research (CCR) has hosted an annual Climate Change Symposium, providing an opportunity for the UW-Madison community to learn about the effects of climate change on our natural resources and ecosystems, as well as economic and public policy implications.

The symposium has featured leading scientists from UW–Madison and beyond, along with panel discussions, student talks, and the Reid Bryson Scholarship Competition.

Past topics have included:

  • Projecting the future of the biosphere and climate
  • Planning for climate-driven species movements
  • Sea-level rise in response to global warming
  • The potential of plants as a global source of fuel and food
