SUMMARY:Uncovering the Hidden Health Costs of Flooding from Space: New Insi
ghts from Satellite Data and Machine Learning
DESCRIPTION:Speaker:  Jonathan Sullivan\, Assistant Professor\, Nelson Ins
titute for Environmental Studies\, UW–Madison\n\n\n\nGlobally\, flooding
affects more people than any other environmental hazard and their consequ
ences are far from uniform\, often exacerbating existing social and econom
ic vulnerabilities. The escalating severity of heavy precipitation has the
potential to amplify the disproportionate effects of flooding on vulnerab
le populations. In particular\, flooding is known to affect numerous healt
h outcomes including infectious disease\, mental health\, and access to he
althcare. However\, previous investigations on flood damage and loss have
been limited to a handful of health outcomes\, localized case studies\, an
d rarely attending to the disproportionate burden experienced by vulnerabl
e communities. The lack of empirical evidence is\, in part\, due to incons
istent and sparse records of historical flood exposure. This talk will exp
lore how novel methods to characterize flood exposure with satellite image
ry and machine learning can enable empirical analyses of flood-related hea
lth outcomes across large spatio-temporal scales. Example studies from the
United States and Bangladesh will demonstrate how such methods can work i
n data rich and sparse contexts. This work provides insight into how flood
ing can influence health over longer time horizons than previously studied
while also identifying underlying factors that predispose communities to
 loss.\n\nView the livestream
