Transition of Tsunami-Like Waves from Basin to Out-Flowing Channel

Tsunami intrusion into rivers is an important aspect of the tsunami hazard. Understanding the ocean-to-river transition of a tsunami is crucial for predicting effects upstream. Idealized laboratory experiments were conducted for tsunami-like waves transitioning from a wide basin into a narrow channel. The incident waves were amplified by both the channel outflow and the transition geometry. These results are important when considering waves with long length scales (such as tsunamis) transmitted from a wide basin (ocean) into an outflowing channel (river).
