A Nonlinear Dynamics Approach to Understanding and Measuring Sustainability

Speaker: Dylan McNamara, Professor and Chair, Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography, University of North Carolina-Wilmington

The term “sustainability” has become ubiquitous in everyday experience.  It is found everywhere from the grocery store to the car dealership.  Despite having the characteristics of a buzzword, sustainability is none the less an extremely important concept as we face global-scale climate challenges resulting from our current, unsustainable relationship with nature.  This talk will provide a foundation for understanding and measuring sustainability using tools from nonlinear dynamics. I will also show recent work using such tools to measure variations in sustainability in communities subject to natural disasters.
